Zinc metal is essential to the galvanizing process, which coats and protects steel from corrosion and rust. We make Prime Western (PW) zinc metal and sell it to the galvanizing industry.

What’s interesting about zinc metal is that we sell it and we buy it. We purchase “used” zinc metal or residue from our hot dip (HDG) and continuous galvanizers (CG). Then, we-reuse and re-process it as a raw material to make all of our products (zinc metal, zinc oxide, zinc dust, zinc fines).

One of the great benefits of zinc is that it can be recycled over and over … and still maintain its properties. We are the largest zinc recycler in the world and encourage reduced waste, reuse and recycling of materials. Sustainability is important, which is why we say, Our Cycle Is Recycle®.  Read more about how our products are Helping the world WorkTM by visiting our Did You Know? page.

U.S. Zinc to raise spot premium prices for zinc oxide

HOUSTON – Officials with U.S. Zinc today announced that spot premium prices for all grades of zinc oxide will increase. The price increase will not affect customers currently under contract with the company.

U.S. Zinc is notifying customers of the change, which will go into effect September 15, 2016. The increase is being implemented to counter increased zinc premiums and other cost pressures.

“Current spot premiums in the market are not sustainable,” said U.S. Zinc President Tracy Baugh. “Ultimately, this price increase allows us to stay ahead of market demand, while maintaining the highest quality and customer service our customers have come to expect.”

Zinc: A Global Supplier’s Perspective

By Joe Husseini, International Sales and Trading director, U.S. Zinc

The marketplace is experiencing a recent uptick in demand for zinc. As a result, zinc inventories are falling and the prices are rising. Since the start of 2016, zinc has risen by almost 40 percent on the London Metal Exchange Index (LME). Specifically, there is a great demand for both zinc oxide and zinc dust in the marketplace. Helping meet this global demand with ample capacity, U.S. Zinc operates four zinc oxide manufacturing locations and the largest single-site zinc dust plant in the world. U.S. Zinc relies on its connections with major zinc metal suppliers for its raw material supply, which is comprised of recycled zinc from various galvanizers and special high grade zinc from the smelters.

U.S. Zinc is a major supplier of zinc oxide and zinc dust. Zinc oxide is found in rubber and tire, ceramics, lubricants, chemical and pharmaceutical products for a variety of enhancement purposes. Zinc dust is used in primer coatings for marine and industrial applications to inhibit corrosion. Zinc used in the galvanizing process acts to inhibit steel corrosion, which dramatically extends the life of the material in marine environments by protecting it from oxidation and water.

With the rebound in the steel markets, galvanizing services are in strong demand. The galvanizing process occurs in a couple of ways. The batch process in hot dip galvanizing, or HDG, is used to coat components with zinc in smaller applications for fabricators and smaller manufacturers. The continuous galvanizers, or steel mills, are typically larger individual plants than their HDG counterparts, coating steel sheet coils with zinc. Ships, bridges, rigs and other marine-grade equipment have galvanization and zinc to thank for this great protection.

This would include its high surface area, low surface area, USP and pelletized grades. U.S. Zinc is notifying customers of the change, which will go into effect August 1, 2013. The company’s other zinc oxide grades will not be affected by the increase.

The price increase is being implemented to differentiate between specialty value grades and standard grades. Higher grade products require more production complexity and manufacturing expense.

“We continue to distinguish our products and services to create more value for our customers. This allows us to reinvest in and enhance product development and manufacturing capabilities for our entire customer base,” said U.S. Zinc Vice President of Commercial Tracy Baugh. “Ultimately, the price increase allows us to expand our capacity, meet market demand and maintain the highest quality, enabling our customers to produce the best finished products possible.”

HOUSTON – Officials with U.S. Zinc today announced the company has begun implementation of its project to expand production at its two domestic zinc oxide plants. Phase 1 of the expansion is slated for completion by the end of the year. The full expansion, which includes facility additions, new employees and new equipment, will increase zinc oxide production by 17,000 metric tons per year.

“As we take our project from the planning stage to breaking ground, we are positioned to grow our workforce and strengthen our presence in the market,” said U.S. Zinc President Rodrigo Daud. “This expansion demonstrates our commitment to ensure supply for the global zinc oxide market.”

Phase 1 of the project will expand U.S. Zinc’s oxide plant in Clarksville, Tenn. Expansion of the company’s Millington, Tenn., plant will occur during the next phase. New equipment at each location will enable the use of secondary raw materials as feedstock, which furthers U.S. Zinc’s commitment to recycling.

“Servicing the market with the highest quality product and meeting the demands of our customers is of paramount importance to us. This expansion exemplifies U.S. Zinc’s commitment to further enhance our service to our customers,” said U.S. Zinc’s Commercial Vice President Tracy Baugh.
