Did You Know?

At U.S. Zinc, our core business, our only business, has been zinc products for more than 65 years. Referenced as the great protector, zinc can shield against corrosion, strengthen products, reduce cracking, enhance nourishment and much more. We are the largest zinc oxide producer in the world and also operate the largest single site zinc dust plant in the world.

Our zinc products are essential, performance-enhancing ingredients in many of the materials used around the globe every day, including tires, paints, coatings, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and galvanized hardware, to name a few.

When we say Helping the World WorkTM, we mean it in so many ways.

Our multiple locations on three continents and our headquarters near the second largest port in the world for gross tonnage provides supply security, large capacity and one of the strongest distribution networks in the industry.

Zinc Oxide

oxideWe are an industry leader and progressive worldwide supplier of zinc oxide. It is our largest selling product. The zinc oxide we manufacture is an essential ingredient in many of the common goods used around the globe every day, including tires, pharmaceuticals, plastics, cosmetics, glass/ceramics and seals/gaskets.

Tire manufacturers use our zinc oxide to vulcanize the rubber to form their tires. Known as “The Great Protector,” zinc oxide has been used for years to soothe diaper rash, prevent sunburns and relieve itching. You even find zinc oxide at the golf course – it is an important ingredient in the plastics used to form golf balls. As you can see, our zinc oxide helps the world work and provides useful products for you at home, too!

Zinc Dust

dustDid you know that U.S. Zinc owns the largest, single site zinc dust plant in the world? It’s located in Houston, Texas and is our second-best-selling product after zinc oxide. The zinc dust we manufacture has a variety of practical uses. It’s used in paints and coatings as a corrosion protector, so products don’t rust or deteriorate as quickly. Zinc dust is also used in gold and silver mines to help recover these precious metals. From small bolts to large boats to a beautiful gold wedding ring, you can find zinc dust at work in everyday life.

Zinc Metal

metalZinc metal is essential to the galvanizing process, which coats and protects steel from corrosion and rust. We make Prime Western (PW) zinc metal and sell it to the galvanizing industry.

What’s interesting about zinc metal is that we sell it and we buy it. We purchase “used” zinc metal or residue from our hot dip (HDG) and continuous galvanizers (CG). Then, we-reuse and re-process it as a raw material to make all of our products (zinc metal, zinc oxide, zinc dust, zinc fines).

One of the great benefits of zinc is that it can be recycled over and over … and still maintain its properties. We are the largest zinc recycler in the world and encourage reduced waste, reuse and recycling of materials. Sustainability is important, which is why we say, Our Cycle Is Recycle®.

Zinc Fines

finesDid you know that zinc fines are essential to the agriculture industry? The zinc fines we produce are used to enhance animal feed and enrich fertilizer and soil for crops. Our customers do this by making zinc sulphate and oxysulphate from our zinc fines. Other customers use zinc fines in their smelting processes.

Zinc fines are a by-product from manufacturing all of our other products – zinc oxide, zinc dust and zinc metal. Each plant contributes to our zinc fines production.

Just as zinc fines help create healthier soil, animals and crops, zinc can also aid human health. Not only can zinc help fight the common cold, it is important for physical growth and human development. In fact, zinc is the number one nutritional deficiency among U.S. children. Tragically, more than 450,000 children under the age of five die from zinc deficiency every year. This is why U.S. Zinc and Votorantim Metais are ambassadors for Zinc Saves Kids. The companies, in partnership with other industry leaders are campaigning to raise funds that go toward UNICEF-supported zinc programs worldwide.
